OPEN CALL: MOTTANNI INVITES FILMMAKERS TO DEVELOP VIDEO CONCEPTS FOR “JUJU” FT. NGEK LOIS
The words have been spoken. Now we want to see what you see.
BAMENDA HIGHLANDS — Award-winning spoken word artist Mottanni is inviting filmmakers, cinematographers, creative directors, videographers, animators and visual storytellers to submit original video concepts for “JUJU,” a spoken word piece by Mottanni featuring Ngek Lois.
Rooted in African identity and cultural heritage, JUJU is an artistic celebration of the glory of Africa and the cultural significance of the Atogho (Togho), the traditional regalia of the people of the North West Region of Cameroon.
The piece draws attention to the beauty, meaning and value of cultural identity. It invites us to reflect on the traditions, symbols, memories and expressions that connect us to our roots. It is also a reminder that African heritage is not merely something to look back on; it is something to understand, celebrate, reinterpret and carry into the future.
Now, Mottanni wants to see how visual creatives interpret that message.
From spoken word to visual storytelling
This is not simply a call for someone to record an artist performing on stage. It is an invitation to imagine, interpret and create.
An official audio recording of JUJU will be shared with interested applicants. Creatives are expected to listen to the piece and develop an original visual treatment inspired by its words, rhythm, imagery, emotions and message.
What story do you hear in the piece? What images come to mind? How would you represent the glory of Africa? How can the Atogho be presented in a way that communicates its cultural value, identity and significance to audiences today?
We want concepts that move beyond the obvious and explore the possibilities of cinema, symbolism, movement, colour, landscape, costume, character and visual metaphor.
The creative possibilities
Applicants may explore a range of approaches, including:
- Cinematic storytelling: Building a visual narrative around the themes and progression of the spoken word.
- African identity and heritage: Celebrating African people, landscapes, traditions, creativity and cultural memory.
- The Atogho: Exploring the symbolism, beauty and cultural value of this traditional regalia.
- Traditional and contemporary expression: Connecting heritage with modern African life, fashion and artistic expression.
- Movement and performance: Using dance, dramatic action, body language and performance to deepen the visual experience.
- Experimental approaches: Animation, mixed media, visual effects and other innovative techniques are welcome.
- There is no single prescribed interpretation. We are interested in original ideas that demonstrate artistic imagination, cultural sensitivity and a clear understanding of the spoken word piece.
Who should apply?
The call is open to established and emerging:
- Film directors and independent filmmakers.
- Cinematographers and videographers.
- Creative directors and visual artists.
- Animators and motion-graphics artists.
- Photographers and multimedia storytellers.
- Independent production teams and creative collectives.
You do not need to be part of a large production company to participate. What matters is the strength of your concept, your creative vision and your ability to communicate how you intend to bring it to life.
What should your proposal contain?
Interested creatives should submit a concept proposal containing:
- Concept title: A distinctive title for your proposed video.
- Concept synopsis: A concise explanation of the story or idea.
- Visual treatment: A description of the scenes, imagery, narrative structure and visual style.
- Mood board or references: Sketches, sample frames, photographs or visual references that communicate the intended direction.
- Production approach: An outline of how you intend to execute the concept.
- Estimated production budget: An indicative breakdown of the resources and costs required.
- Portfolio: Links or samples of previous creative work.
Submissions will be considered based on originality, interpretation of the spoken word, storytelling strength, cultural sensitivity, visual creativity and production feasibility.

Let's give our heritage a visual voice
JUJU is an invitation to see African identity through the eyes of creative storytellers. It is an opportunity to celebrate the Atogho, honour the richness of our cultural heritage and explore how the stories of our people can be expressed through contemporary visual art.
If you have a vision, a story to tell and the creative ability to turn words into pictures, we want to see it.
The words have been spoken. Now we want to see what you see.
